The Sydney World Rice Festival is a FREE and exciting two-day culinary and cultural event taking place at Tumbalong Park in Sydney on Saturday, 7 October and Sunday, 8 October 2017.
Come and learn more about one of the world’s most widely used staple foods during an amazing array of interactive activities, special cultural events and of course, tantalising sweet and savoury rice dishes from all corners of the globe.
Rice is so much more than sustenance – along with being a versatile and nutritious staple of cooking around the globe, it is also an integral part of a diverse range of cultures and symbolically used in ceremonies of birth, adulthood, marriage and death.
The Sydney World Rice Festival will bring to light the many untold and interesting stories about rice culture and rituals around the world in a fun and engaging festival atmosphere. Discover the world’s great rice cultures by sampling more than 100 famous rice dishes, snacks and beverages from 10 vibrant countries.
This is the ultimate culinary adventure – the festival will showcase over 20 pop-up food stalls and food trucks offering a range of popular and unique rice-based dishes, including appetisers, main meals, desserts and drinks.

• yakionigiri (charcoal-grilled rice triangles)
• wagyu sukiyaki rice balls
• Egyptian street food
• South-American grilled barbecue with arroz verde (Argentinian green rice)
• Indonesian beef rending
• Award-winning paella
• American-Filipino fusion longanisa rice burger
• Filipino BBQ skewers
• Poke (Hawaiian sushi salad)
• Arancini balls
• Vietnamese street food (including pho)
• Japanese pastries
• Italian popsicles (including specially-crafted rice flavours) and lots more.
Rice doesn’t always have to be savoury – come and try a special creation by Paleteria Sydney – a rice pudding paletta with cinnamon, pistachio and edible flower – it’s an exclusive creation only for the Sydney World Rice Festival.

Vendor highlights include Tsuru Food Truck (Japanese), El Qahirah (Egyptian), and Washoku Lovers partnering with chef Takumi Wakano of Shiki Japanese Restaurant, Sakura On Wheelz, Mate Burger, Despana, and Mama Linh's. You can also chill out in the beer garden with the Asahi pop-up bar, or sip on a traditional sake (Japanese rice wine).
The festival will feature enlightening Egyptian cooking demonstrations with El Qahira's and you can learn how to make award winning Spanish Paella with Sydney's famous Spanish restaurant at Despana's cooking demonstration. Lovers of Japanese cooking won’t want to miss the demonstration on how to make temari sushi (rice balls).
There will also be lots of cultural entertainment to enjoy, including origami artist Midori Furze, a rice produce showcase by Thai Trade, a DJ all weekend and free giveaways from SunRice, a proud sponsor of the Sydney World Rice Festival.
